Ex-Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel has slammed Manchester United’s ongoing reliance on Harry Maguire, claiming the out-of-form defender lacks the consistency to anchor their backline.
Mikel insists Maguire should be stripped of his starting role if United are serious about reviving their fading Premier League ambitions. His scathing remarks follow United’s embarrassing 2-0 loss to newly promoted Hull City, where Maguire’s shaky performance drew heavy criticism.
On his podcast, Mikel blasted United’s defensive hierarchy, stating that Maguire was never the right long-term solution. “He doesn’t fit their style or philosophy,” Mikel argued, questioning how the 30-year-old has remained at Old Trafford for nearly a decade.
While conceding Maguire could serve as a squad player, Mikel stressed that Lisandro Martinez, Matthijs de Ligt, and Leny Yoro offer superior options. He expressed frustration over manager Michael Carrick’s persistence with the England international, calling the decision “inexplicable.”
Mikel also highlighted Maguire’s lack of pace and sluggish distribution, arguing these flaws leave United vulnerable against high-intensity opponents.
The Red Devils will aim to respond when they welcome Ipswich Town in their first home fixture this weekend.
