Renowned Nigerian business mogul and philanthropist Obinna Iyiegbu, widely recognized as Obi Cubana, has revealed that his increasing political engagement stems from a deep-seated passion for driving inclusive governance and civic empowerment in Nigeria.
In an official statement released on Monday, the entertainment and hospitality tycoon emphasized that his political aspirations are rooted in nation-building rather than personal interests.
The self-made billionaire highlighted his entrepreneurial journey, noting that his success was achieved independently without reliance on political connections or public office privileges.
Cubana stressed that his political involvement aims to amplify citizen voices, particularly among youth and marginalized communities, while fostering national cohesion.
He urged government institutions to prioritize transparency, accountability, and citizen-centric policies, emphasizing that public trust remains crucial for democratic sustainability.
The business leader also addressed recent controversies regarding his remarks about Igbo political awareness, firmly rejecting any suggestions of ethnic bias and reaffirming his commitment to national unity.
The statement elaborated: “My entire career has been built on enterprise and innovation, completely independent of government influence. Political office has never been part of my journey until now.
“I’m stepping into political discourse to facilitate meaningful intergenerational dialogue and promote national integration across Nigeria’s diverse communities.
“There’s a growing disconnect between governance structures and citizen needs. Many well-intentioned policies fail because they’re either poorly communicated or implemented without proper grassroots engagement.
“Restoring faith in governance requires deliberate, consistent effort. In a true democracy, the people’s will must be the compass that guides all decision-making processes.
“Any suggestion that I would disparage the intellectual capacity or unity of the Igbo people – or any ethnic group – is completely unfounded. Such divisive narratives only weaken our collective potential as a nation.
“Effective governance requires synergy across all levels – from local administrations to federal institutions. Development must be decentralized to truly transform lives nationwide.”
Regarding his affiliation with the City Boy Movement, Cubana clarified that the platform seeks to revolutionize political participation by engaging youth and business leaders while transcending ethnic boundaries.
He further stated: “The City Boy Movement represents a new paradigm in civic engagement – creating avenues for productive discourse between Nigeria’s youth, private sector stakeholders, and policymakers.
“Reducing political movements to ethnic affiliations undermines democratic principles. Our focus must remain on progressive ideas, inclusive policies, and national development.”
