Usman Bugaje, a former legislator representing Jibia/Kaita Federal Constituency in Katsina State, has responded to ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo’s recent comments disputing claims of his alleged third-term bid.

Obasanjo had previously dared critics to substantiate allegations that he sought an unconstitutional extension of his presidency.

However, Bugaje countered these assertions during an interview on Monday, insisting that Obasanjo relentlessly pursued a third term despite constitutional limitations.

He recounted firsthand experiences of intimidation and coercion from Obasanjo’s associates, detailing how lawmakers who resisted the agenda faced severe pressures.

Bugaje was reacting to Obasanjo’s weekend remark suggesting that securing another term would have been effortless if he had truly desired it.

Appearing on Arise Television’s Morning Show, Bugaje revealed credible accounts of financial inducements offered to legislators to push the controversial agenda forward.

He stated: “There is no doubt Obasanjo pursued a third term—his actions spoke louder than words. His proxies aggressively lobbied lawmakers, resorting to threats and monetary incentives.”

“The absence of direct calls doesn’t exonerate him—political maneuvers rarely work transparently. Many of us endured threats, while others yielded to financial pressure.”

“Senator Victor Lar, then a key Northern Caucus leader, was forced into hiding. Our collective resistance ultimately halted Obasanjo’s ambitions.”

“The truth is undeniable. Witnesses, including lawmakers who rejected bribes and those who accepted them, can attest to these events.”
