Stanley Nwabali

Ex-Super Eagles defender Sam Sodje has raised concerns over Stanley Nwabali’s growing complacency, warning that the goalkeeper’s demeanor could spell trouble for the national team.

Sodje shared his candid views during an appearance on Brila FM’s sports talk show, ‘No Holds Barred with Ifeanyi Udeze.’

The remarks follow mounting speculation about Nwabali’s shaky position as Nigeria’s starting goalkeeper, fueled by recent high-profile mistakes that have drawn criticism.

With crucial 2026 World Cup qualifiers approaching in November, reports suggest coach Eric Chelle is actively evaluating alternative options between the posts.

“There’s a fine line between self-assurance and arrogance, and Nwabali’s recent behavior leans toward the latter,” Sodje remarked.

“If the coaching staff senses he’s becoming a liability, they must act decisively—before his errors prove costly in a critical match.”

He added, “His recent performances hint at impending disaster. This is precisely when a sports psychologist should step in to recalibrate his mindset.”
