Rev. Father Kelvin Ugwu, a Nigerian Catholic priest, has publicly criticized Nigerians who modify XR iPhones to mimic the iPhone 17 Pro Max.

He described this trend as a manifestation of a deep-rooted issue often referred to as a “poverty mentality.”

Recently, a number of Nigerians have been acquiring older iPhone XR models that are altered to resemble the latest iPhone 17 Pro Max, aiming to project an image of wealth.

In a statement shared on social media, Fr. Ugwu expressed his concerns:

“This behavior stems from a lack of satisfaction, an untreated poverty mentality, and an unhealthy obsession with portraying a false image. Grown adults are knowingly purchasing iPhone XR models masquerading as iPhone 17 Pro Max devices just to appear affluent.

Owning an iPhone 17 Pro Max is unnecessary. Those who possess it often resort to taking selfies or videos solely to showcase themselves and the device, which is incredibly immature.

It’s crucial to rid yourself of these insecurities, particularly the need to prove something to others as if you’re indebted to them.

After flaunting your iPhone 17 Pro Max, what’s next? Will it grant you immortality?” he questioned.
