Nigerian rapper Odumodublvck has sparked a heated debate following his bold declaration about the state of hip-hop music.
The ‘Declan Rice’ artist echoed a controversial stance previously taken by Afrobeats star Wizkid, claiming that hip-hop has faded into irrelevance.
Odumodublvck made the statement while reacting to a viral Spotify chart showcasing Nigerian artists with the highest monthly listeners—a list dominated entirely by Afrobeats and pop acts.
His blunt remark, “Hip Hop is dead,” triggered backlash from fans and fellow artists who accused him of undermining the genre’s global influence.
Notably, no Nigerian hip-hop artist appeared in the top 10, reinforcing his argument about the genre’s declining commercial appeal locally.
Burna Boy leads the rankings with an impressive 40.68 million monthly listeners, narrowly edging out Tems at 40.64 million.
Rema secures third place with 29.43 million streams, while Ayra Starr and Wizkid follow closely with 16.84 million and 16.81 million listeners respectively.
Completing the list are Omah Lay (11.24 million), Davido (10.83 million), CKay (10.71 million), Fireboy DML (9.23 million), and Asake (8.69 million).
