Nigerian billionaire and philanthropist Abdul Samad Rabiu has stunned the nation by honoring his financial pledge to the Super Eagles despite their heartbreaking loss to Morocco in the AFCON 2025 semi-finals.
The industrialist, ranked among Africa’s wealthiest individuals, had earlier promised a staggering $500,000 bonus if Nigeria advanced past the semi-finals, along with escalating rewards for goals scored in subsequent matches.
“Your relentless spirit has united our nation like never before,” Rabiu declared after the quarter-final victory that set up the Morocco clash. “This is just the beginning of our appreciation for your extraordinary efforts.”
Despite Nigeria’s 4-2 penalty shootout defeat on Wednesday night, Rabiu demonstrated exceptional sportsmanship by maintaining his commitment to the team. In an emotional Instagram post, he wrote:
“To our valiant Super Eagles,
“Though the scoreboard didn’t reflect our hopes, your determination and skill have written a new chapter in Nigerian football history. The courage you displayed under pressure deserves recognition beyond trophies.”
The magnate emphasized that the $500,000 reward stands as a testament to the team’s dedication, stating: “True champions are measured not just by victories, but by their ability to inspire a nation. You’ve achieved that magnificently.”
