Nigerian basketball player and University of the Philippines (UP) student Israel Osamudiame Friday has tragically passed away.
The young athlete collapsed during a basketball training session on Tuesday, August 19, leading to his untimely demise.
Reports indicate that Friday, who would have celebrated his 20th birthday on September 6, was among UP’s newest recruits for the Fighting Maroons team.
UP’s Office for Athletics and Sports Development director, Bo Perasol, confirmed the heartbreaking news in an official statement published by Filipino outlet Spin.ph.
“UP is heartbroken to confirm that one of our newest recruits, Israel Osamudiame, collapsed during practice yesterday. He was immediately taken to a nearby hospital where, despite medical efforts, he passed away,” Perasol stated.
Standing at an impressive 6-foot-10, the Abuja-born forward had recently joined the Fighting Maroons after transferring from Centro Escolar University (CEU), where he played for the Scorpions in the University and Colleges Athletic League (UCAL).
Friday was scheduled to complete a mandatory one-year residency before becoming eligible to play in UAAP Season 89.
According to witnesses, the athlete was actively participating in team drills at the Varsity Training Centre in Diliman when he suddenly collapsed.
Team physical therapists provided immediate first aid and transported him to a hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
The exact cause of death remains undetermined as medical professionals continue their investigation.
Perasol emphasized the university’s devastation and commitment to supporting Friday’s family during this difficult period.
“UP is in close contact with his family and is providing full support during this tragedy. The university requests respect for the family’s privacy as they mourn this profound loss,” he added.
Friday was considered one of the most promising young basketball talents in Philippine collegiate sports, with his exceptional height, skills, and athleticism making him a valuable addition to UP’s roster for future competitions.
