
President Bola Tinubu has extended his warm congratulations to Nigerian musicians who triumphed at the 9th All Africa Music Awards (AFRIMA), hailing their success as a reflection of Nigeria’s flourishing creative sector and its expanding global appeal.
In an official statement issued by the State House, the President commended the artists for elevating Nigeria’s reputation on an international platform, emphasizing that their accomplishments highlight the ingenuity, perseverance, and artistic brilliance of the nation’s youth.
Nigeria showcased an impressive performance at the event, which took place from January 7 to 11, 2026, in Lagos.
Lagos was officially announced as the host city for AFRIMA 2026 by the African Union Commission on April 9, 2025, during a ceremony in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
Among the night’s standout winners, Rema secured Artiste of the Year, Best Male Artiste in Western Africa, and Best African RnB & Soul.
Burna Boy was honored with Album of the Year, while Shallipopi claimed Song of the Year and Best African Collaboration, a category he shared with Burna Boy.
Other notable victories included Phyno for Best African Hip-Hop, Qing Madi as Most Promising Artiste, and Yemi Alade for Best Soundtrack.
Chella was celebrated with the African Fans’ Favourite award, and industry veterans Kenny Ogungbe and Dayo Adeneye received the prestigious AFRIMA Legendary Award.
President Tinubu remarked that these accolades underscore the dedication and persistence of Nigerian artists, reinforcing the country’s dominance in Africa’s music landscape.
He emphasized that events like AFRIMA provide a vital stage for African talents to showcase their skills and compete on a global scale.
The President also lauded Lagos State for hosting a seamless and world-class event, praising Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and the state government for ensuring safety and hospitality for attendees and participants from across Africa.
Reiterating his administration’s focus on youth development, Tinubu highlighted the pivotal role of the creative economy—spanning music, film, and fashion—in fostering employment, driving tourism, and enhancing Nigeria’s economic expansion.
A former recipient of the African Union’s Pillar of Art and Culture Award in 2015, President Tinubu reaffirmed his dedication to nurturing Nigeria’s cultural heritage and uplifting homegrown artistic talent through strategic initiatives.
