Afrobeats star and business mogul Oluwatosin Ajibade, better known as Mr Eazi, has revealed he was the originator of the now-iconic term “Detty December,” widely used to describe Nigeria’s vibrant holiday festivities.
During his Detty Rave concert in Ghana, the artist shared that he came up with the phrase while organizing events in Accra as a young promoter.
He emphasized, however, that the cultural movement transcends individual ownership.
“Back in 2016, while brainstorming with my team for our December event, I proposed ‘Detty December’ as the name. We ran with it, and the hashtag took off.
“Detty December represents homecoming, celebration, and living life to the fullest. It’s not about me—it’s a collective experience that belongs to everyone,” Mr Eazi explained.

“So in 2016, me and my guys invented Detty December… Detty December is bigger than Mr. Eazi. It’s bigger than anybody…”

This revelation comes years after entrepreneur Deola Art Alade faced public criticism for trademarking “Detty December” in 2019, sparking debates about cultural ownership versus commercialization.
Many Nigerians argued the term had become part of the nation’s festive lexicon, making private ownership controversial.
