Bukunmi Oluwasina

Renowned Nollywood star Bukunmi Oluwasina has dismissed the trending mantra of “women supporting women” as nothing more than a facade.

The talented actress and mother revealed that superficial camaraderie among women in the entertainment industry often masks deeper divisions.

In a candid BBC Pidgin interview, Oluwasina exposed the fleeting nature of female alliances in Nollywood, stating that many public displays of solidarity lack sincerity.

She highlighted a troubling trend where women readily extend financial assistance to male colleagues but hesitate when fellow actresses need support.

The screen diva observed that this paradoxical behavior extends beyond Nollywood, permeating various professional spheres.

While acknowledging genuine female success stories in entertainment, Oluwasina criticized how some women undermine others’ achievements by perpetuating the “sponsor” narrative.

Her blunt assessment continued: “This whole women-supporting-women thing for Nollywood? Pure deception. “The support never lasts. Even when it appears to exist, everyone knows the truth – women remain their own worst enemies.

“You’ll hear women say they’d loan money to a man starting a business, but helping a sister? Suddenly it becomes complicated. I don’t understand why, but that’s the reality.

“This isn’t just a Nollywood problem. Eventually, you see through the fake support. Even when they claim it exists, you can sense the insincerity.

“Genuine support rarely happens, and when it does, the motives are often questionable.

“We have incredibly talented women in this industry who’ve succeeded without sponsors – their work speaks for itself. Yet others hide behind their success, spreading rumors to diminish their accomplishments.”
