Popular Nollywood star Aremu Afolayan has publicly apologized for his controversial political statements and declared his exit from political commentary following intense public criticism.
In an emotional social media post, the actor sought forgiveness from Nigerians after facing widespread condemnation for his recent remarks about national issues.
Afolayan described the backlash as overwhelming and categorically denied allegations of financial inducement from any political figures or groups.
The actor clarified his position on Nigeria’s security challenges, insisting his comments were misinterpreted. While acknowledging the reality of insecurity, he shared a personal account involving the kidnapping of a close associate’s family member.
“The threats and kidnappings are real – I know this firsthand after my friend’s mother was abducted and we had to pay ransom,” Afolayan explained.
Announcing his political retirement, the actor stated: “To my fellow Nigerians, I sincerely apologize. The condemnation I’m facing is too severe. I want to make clear that I never received any payments from anyone.
“Of course insecurity exists and the government needs to do more. My point was simply that we shouldn’t engage those denying the crisis.
“After recent events, I’ve decided to completely remove myself from any political discussions or engagements.”
“To all Nigerians, please forgive me. I’m very sorry. The cvr$3s you guys are raining on me is too much. I didn’t take money from anyone. It’s obvious that there’s insecurity and the government isn’t doing anything; what I was trying to say is don’t answer anyone who is saying… https://t.co/BaOnaUvPiR pic.twitter.com/ExhVG56XSD

This reversal comes just weeks after Afolayan publicly endorsed President Bola Tinubu for the upcoming 2027 elections.
The actor had faced particular criticism for dismissing widespread economic hardship while praising the administration’s policies in a viral video clip.
His political comments sparked heated online debates, with many Nigerians accusing him of being out of touch with the challenges facing ordinary citizens.
