Renowned Nollywood star Ngozi Nwosu has opened up about enduring domestic abuse in her past marriage, disclosing that she faced brutal assaults even while expecting a child.
During an emotional interview on the podcast Real Life Matters With Aunty Ayo, hosted by actress Ayo Adesanya, Nwosu emphasized that marriage should never be a life-or-death commitment and encouraged women to value their well-being above societal judgments.
“Marriage isn’t a battlefield where you must fight to the end,” she stated.
“People often share their abuse stories online, posting images with captions like, ‘He hit me, he did this.’ But when real violence strikes—when you’re fighting for survival—you won’t even think about social media.”
Nwosu admitted she kept her suffering private for years, refusing to expose her struggles to the public eye.
“I’ve never spoken about the horrors I faced in my marriage until now. Even when journalists pressed me, I refused to air my pain publicly. It’s over, and I’d rather leave it in the past,” she revealed.
Recalling her wedding day, she shared that she nearly called off the marriage due to early signs of abuse but was pressured into staying.
“He attacked me while I was pregnant, and I knew then it was a mistake. My sister begged me to stay, worried about what people would say. I gave in, but abuse never stops after the first strike—it becomes a cycle.”
She also voiced deep concern for women trapped in abusive relationships, citing the tragic case of late gospel artist Osinachi Nwachukwu, whose life was cut short by domestic violence.
“When the pain becomes unbearable, you must leave. Your life matters more than anyone’s opinion,” she urged.
