The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has distanced itself from a post-match statement that condemned Super Eagles skipper William Troost-Ekong and forward Cyriel Dessers following Tuesday’s 1-1 stalemate with South Africa in their Group C 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier.
The controversial statement, attributed to NFF Communications Director Ademola Olajire, described Dessers as ineffective and held Troost-Ekong responsible for the own goal that put South Africa ahead.
It stated: “Cyriel Dessers, who struggled in Uyo as a substitute who was later substituted, failed to improve, showing poor movement, losing aerial duels, and offering little threat in attack.”
Regarding Troost-Ekong, it added: “The Eagles’ morale dipped temporarily after captain William Ekong accidentally diverted the ball into his own net in the 25th minute, wrong-footing Stanley Nwabali to gift South Africa the lead and momentum.”
However, NFF General Secretary Mohammed Sanusi clarified that the statement was unauthorized and did not reflect the Federation’s stance.
“I saw the release like everyone else. The NFF does not endorse such comments. We value all our players. Holding individuals accountable for team performances is unjust.
“Victories belong to the team, as do defeats. Troost-Ekong’s own goal was unlucky—he aimed to clear danger. Football fans know these incidents occur,” Sanusi explained.
He reaffirmed the Federation’s commitment to upcoming qualifiers and AFCON 2025 preparations.
“We’re fully focused on the remaining matches and Morocco 2025. There are no issues with our squad or technical team. The NFF and government appreciate the players’ dedication,” he continued.
Sanusi promised disciplinary measures regarding the unauthorized statement.
“Appropriate action will be taken,” he emphasized.
The Super Eagles currently occupy third place in Group C with 11 points from eight games, trailing leaders South Africa (17 points). Nigeria must secure victories against Lesotho and Benin Republic in October while relying on favorable results elsewhere to maintain qualification chances.
