Super Eagles

The Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) has specifically highlighted Cyriel Dessers and skipper William Troost-Ekong following the Super Eagles’ 1-1 stalemate with South Africa in Tuesday’s 2026 World Cup qualifying match.

Nigeria entered the clash desperate for a victory to boost their qualification hopes.

However, they fell behind in the 25th minute when Troost-Ekong accidentally put the ball into his own net.

Calvin Bassey later equalized just before halftime with a strong header.

A post-match release from NFF Communications Director, Dr Ademola Olajire, criticized Dessers, who was substituted at halftime.

“Cyriel Dessers, who had a forgettable performance in Uyo and was subbed off, fared no better this time—struggling with pace, aerial duels, and failing to spark Nigeria’s attack,” the statement said.

Troost-Ekong was also faulted for South Africa’s opening goal.

“The Super Eagles’ morale dipped after captain William Ekong’s unfortunate own goal in the 25th minute, which deceived Stanley Nwabali and handed Bafana Bafana both the lead and momentum,”
the statement added.
