Super Eagles

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has issued a formal apology to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Federal Government, and devoted football fans across the nation following the Super Eagles’ failure to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

In a statement released via the NFF’s official X account on Monday, the organization described Sunday’s defeat against DR Congo in the Africa Play-off Final in Rabat as a heart-wrenching moment for Nigerian football. The statement emphasized that the Super Eagles symbolize unity, pride, and national hope, and missing the World Cup for the second time in a row is a devastating blow to the country’s football aspirations.

“The NFF, alongside our technical team and players, deeply feels the weight of this disappointment. We recognize the unwavering support Nigerians have shown us, both in victories and defeats. Our collective effort fell short, and for that, we take full responsibility.

“The emotional toll on the players was evident post-match, with many visibly distraught and unable to express their sorrow in words.

The statement expressed gratitude to the Federal Government, National Sports Commission, National Assembly, key ministries, diplomatic missions, media, and especially the passionate fans whose unwavering loyalty remains unparalleled in global football.

“Football is more than a sport in Nigeria—it is a unifying force that transcends ethnicity, religion, and politics. It embodies our shared identity as a nation, and we owe it to the people to honor that legacy with accountability and renewed determination,” the statement continued.

Looking forward, the NFF pledged to focus on the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco 2025, viewing it as an opportunity for redemption and a chance to revive the pride of Nigerian football.

“In the coming weeks, the NFF leadership will conduct a thorough review of our technical, administrative, and structural frameworks to identify the shortcomings that led to this outcome. This evaluation will guide crucial reforms to ensure future success for our national teams.

“We solemnly vow to the Nigerian people: this setback will not define us. We will rebuild, regain trust, and restore Nigeria’s place among football’s elite nations.

“Nigeria’s resilience and spirit remain unshaken. Like the nation itself, the Super Eagles will rise again,” the NFF affirmed.
