Ali Ndume

Senator Ali Ndume has raised alarms over alleged government surveillance, claiming Nigerian authorities are actively monitoring his phone communications—a revelation that has ignited debates over privacy and national security.

The lawmaker disclosed this during an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today, where he expressed frustration over the apparent contradiction in security agencies’ capabilities.

Ndume revealed that he has repeatedly received warnings to watch his words during phone conversations due to ongoing surveillance. When pressed for confirmation, he unequivocally stated that his calls are being tracked.

Despite the gravity of his claim, the senator downplayed personal concerns, emphasizing Nigeria’s broader security crisis. He challenged authorities on their inability to trace terrorists who openly flaunt crimes on platforms like TikTok, despite possessing the technology to monitor public figures.

In his words: “It’s baffling that terrorists boldly broadcast their atrocities on social media, yet evade capture. If my phone can be monitored, why can’t security agencies track these criminals?”

He further questioned: “When journalists uncover sensitive information about me, why can’t intelligence units do the same with terrorists? The resources exist—so where’s the disconnect?”

Confronted directly about government surveillance, Ndume affirmed: “Yes, my communications are being monitored.”

However, he remained pragmatic, stating: “This isn’t about me—Nigeria faces far greater threats. Surveillance isn’t the issue; ineffective action is.”
