Nigerian musician John Ighodaro, popularly known as Johnny Drille, recently revealed how he resisted pressure to alter his distinctive musical style.
The talented artist disclosed that before joining Mavin Records, two prominent record labels pushed him to modify his sound to fit mainstream trends.
The ‘Wait For Me’ singer highlighted Don Jazzy’s belief in his artistry, stating that the Mavin Records founder signed him purely based on admiration for his music.
During an appearance on the CreativTea podcast, Johnny Drille shared, “Nobody expected Mavin Records, under Don Jazzy, to bring in an alternative artist like me. It surprised many in the industry.
“Other major labels kept suggesting changes—asking me to speed up my songs or make them more danceable. Their focus wasn’t on preserving my authentic sound.
“Don Jazzy was different. He appreciated my music exactly as it was. Signing me was undoubtedly a bold move, but it proved successful.”
Following his breakthrough on Project Fame West Africa in 2013, Johnny Drille captivated audiences with his 2015 debut single ‘Wait For Me.’
His journey with Mavin Records began in 2017, culminating in the release of his first studio album, ‘Before We Fall Asleep,’ in 2021.
