José Mourinho, Real Madrid’s head coach, has revealed the key reason behind the club’s failed attempt to secure Rodri’s signature from Manchester City, despite presenting a lucrative offer.
The Spanish international was high on Real Madrid’s wishlist in the summer, but negotiations stalled, leading to Rodri’s eventual switch to arch-rivals Barcelona.
Mourinho disclosed that he personally engaged with Rodri multiple times throughout the talks, confirming that Los Blancos tabled an enticing financial and sporting package to lure the midfield powerhouse.
Madrid also maintained positive relations with Manchester City, engaging Rodri directly before formal discussions with the Premier League side.
However, the 27-year-old remained indecisive, and according to Mourinho, this hesitation became the decisive factor in Madrid withdrawing from the race.
“Rodri had reservations—his uncertainty made me reconsider,” Mourinho admitted.
The Portuguese tactician praised Rodri’s professionalism throughout the negotiations, emphasizing there were no hard feelings.
Despite mutual respect, Rodri’s reluctance ultimately scuppered the transfer, leaving Madrid to explore other targets.
