Renowned Nollywood actress Patience Ozokwor, popularly referred to as Mama G, has issued a stern warning to parents, emphasizing that excessive pampering may cripple a child’s ability to develop resilience and independence in adulthood.
Speaking on parenting styles during a recent interview, Ozokwor stressed the importance of allowing children to face life’s challenges rather than handing them everything on a silver platter. She cautioned against shielding kids from hardships, arguing that struggles build character and self-sufficiency.
“Many parents make the mistake of thinking, ‘I don’t want my children to endure the struggles I faced,’ but that mindset can be detrimental,” the veteran actress explained. “When you deny them the opportunity to overcome obstacles, you deny them growth.”
Ozokwor clarified that she isn’t advocating for deliberate suffering but rather encouraging parents to let their children experience the natural process of hard work and perseverance. “Struggle is a teacher, not a punishment,” she asserted. “Pampering only breeds dependency, not strength.”
The actress also addressed the common expectation of inherited wealth, urging parents not to condition their children to rely solely on family assets. “Your achievements should inspire them, not define them,” she stated firmly. “Make it clear—what’s mine remains mine; go out and build your own legacy.”
Leading by example, Ozokwor revealed that she raised her son with the same philosophy. “I told him, ‘My house belongs to me—go and create yours,’” she shared. “True wealth comes from effort, not entitlement.”
