Super Eagles star Moses Simon has opened up about his father’s ultimatum—join the military or succeed in football—a pivotal moment that shaped his journey to professional success.
In a candid chat with Urban Well Sports, the Paris FC forward shared how his dad, a retired soldier, emphasized discipline, resilience, and independence early on.
“My father made it clear: If football didn’t work out, I’d enlist,” Simon revealed. “A soldier’s son can’t stay idle at home—it’s not in our blood.”
Despite facing rejections from local clubs and a failed move to Ajax, Simon never wavered. His breakthrough came when Dutch coach Tonnie Bruins Slot, fondly called “Coach Bors,” traveled to Kaduna to scout him.
Before any contract was signed, Slot handed Simon ₦200,000—a small fortune at the time—along with an extra ₦40,000 for travel. “That moment changed everything,” Simon said. “I couldn’t believe someone believed in me that much.”
Excited, he rushed home to share the news with his father, who was stunned at the amount. “My dad worked post-retirement for ₦5,000 a month,” Simon recalled. “Seeing me with ₦200,000 was unreal for him.”
The winger admitted that he barely slept that night, keeping the money under his pillow until morning. His father advised him to save a portion for emergencies—a lesson Simon carried with him as he ventured abroad.
Looking back, Simon joked that his father now lives stress-free while he shoulders the responsibilities. “He’s in a better place now—no pressure, no worries. I think I’m the one dealing with the demands,” he laughed.
From the barracks of Kaduna to European stadiums, Simon’s story is a testament to resilience. His message? Persistence and discipline always triumph.
