The Olu of Kemta Orile in Odeda Local Government Area of Ogun State, Oba Adetokunbo Tejuosho, has condemned Fuji artist Taye Currency’s performance at the coronation of Oba Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja as the 44th Olubadan of Ibadan.
A widely circulated clip on social media captured the musician delivering controversial lyrics in Yoruba: *“Were la fi n wo were”* (translated as “we counter madness with madness”).

In a scathing rebuke, Oba Tejuosho denounced the artist’s lyrics as *“vulgarly inappropriate for a royal occasion.”*
He emphasized that such performances undermine the reverence expected at traditional installations, describing the incident as an affront to Yoruba cultural values.
The monarch stressed that royal coronations symbolize cultural heritage and communal pride, demanding decorum from all participants.
*“The ancestral throne isn’t a comedy stage,”* Oba Tejuosho declared. *“Kingship embodies sanctity—requiring dignity, honor, and absolute respect from everyone in attendance.”*
Expressing dismay, he questioned the wisdom behind selecting Taye Currency for the event, given the presence of global dignitaries, including President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
*“Music in royal courts isn’t mere amusement but a tribute to heritage and authority,”* he noted. *“Artists like King Sunny Ade, Ebenezer Obey, or K1 De Ultimate would have better honored this legacy.”*
Further criticizing the choice, he remarked that even local talents such as Rasheed Ayinde (Merenge) could have delivered a performance befitting the occasion’s significance.
