Mikel Obi

Ex-Super Eagles skipper and Chelsea legend John Obi Mikel has openly criticized the recent national team selections for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations, casting doubt on the integrity of the process.

Mikel suggested that head coach Eric Chelle may have faced undue interference while assembling the 28-man squad, questioning the exclusion of key players like Maduka Okoye, Tolu Arokodare, and Kelechi Iheanacho.

During an episode of his Obi One Podcast, the retired midfielder expressed skepticism over the fairness of the selection. “From what I’m hearing, the wrong players are being called up,” Mikel stated. “It doesn’t seem like the coach has full control—there’s too much external pressure dictating his choices.”

The Eagles are set to clash with Egypt in a warm-up match before their Group C opener against Tanzania, with Uganda and Tunisia also vying for qualification.
