Nigeria’s head coach during the 2016 Olympics, Samson Siasia, has denied allegations that ex-midfielder John Mikel Obi funded the team’s airfare to Brazil.
This comes after Obi alleged in a recent interview on Peter Crouch’s podcast that he personally covered the travel expenses, accusing Nigerian football officials of misusing the allocated funds and failing to reimburse him.
However, Siasia, speaking to journalist Callistus Ebare, clarified: “While Mikel may have settled some hotel costs, he was not responsible for the team’s flights from the U.S. to Brazil.
“If Mikel has proof of payment, he should present it publicly.”
Despite the pre-tournament difficulties, Nigeria’s U-23 team clinched a bronze medal at the Games.
