Former Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel has voiced his opinion on the club’s managerial search, dismissing Cesc Fàbregas as a contender while endorsing ex-teammate Filipe Luís for the role.
With current interim boss Calum McFarlane set to oversee the squad until season’s end, Chelsea’s hierarchy is meticulously reviewing candidates to fill the position permanently.
During a candid discussion on his Obi One Podcast, Mikel acknowledged Fàbregas’ progress at Italian side Como but cautioned that the former Arsenal star still lacks the required experience for Stamford Bridge.
“Fabregas shows promise, but it’s premature for such a high-profile job,” Mikel stated. “While his work with Como is impressive, he needs more time to develop his managerial credentials before taking charge at Chelsea.”
The Nigerian football icon instead threw his support behind Luís, highlighting the Brazilian tactician’s innovative approach during his tenure at Flamengo. Mikel was particularly impressed by Luís’ team structure evident during their Club World Cup campaign.
“Filipe Luis has demonstrated real managerial quality,” Mikel explained. “His Flamengo side played with clear identity and purpose – exactly what top clubs look for. There’s obvious potential there.”
Analyzing Luís’ credentials further, Mikel noted: “While his managerial CV might be relatively short, the footballing philosophy he implemented shows he understands what’s needed at elite level. That excites me more than more experienced candidates.”
Chelsea’s board continues their exhaustive search, reportedly considering several unnamed candidates. The club remains stuck to making a considered decision rather than rushing their appointment.
