Mike Ejeagha

Nigeria’s music world has lost an irreplaceable legend—highlife maestro Mike Ejeagha, who succumbed to prostate cancer after a courageous 16-year battle. His passing marks the end of an era in Igbo folk and highlife music.

His son, Emma Ejeagha, confirmed the heartbreaking news to Vanguard on Saturday, revealing that the 95-year-old icon drew his last breath at the 32 Garrison Hospital in Enugu.

Emma shared that his father’s health struggles began in 2006 after his cancer diagnosis. Over the years, the music legend faced numerous hospitalizations, with his condition deteriorating drastically just two weeks before his death. Despite initial signs of recovery, Mike was readmitted last Tuesday, where he tragically lost the fight.

Reflecting on his father’s final moments, Emma described him as a man of wisdom, kindness, and extraordinary talent. “Papa left us peacefully at 8 p.m. on Friday. I was there with him till the end. Tomorrow, I’ll gather my siblings to share this painful news,” he said solemnly.

True to his principles, Mike Ejeagha had made a final request: no embalming and a swift burial. His son vowed to honor these wishes as the family prepares to bid farewell to a musical titan.

A gifted folklorist and composer, Mike Ejeagha shaped Nigeria’s highlife sound with his soul-stirring Igbo melodies. Songs like “Ka Esi Le Onye Isi Oche,” released in 1983, remained timeless, even experiencing a viral revival in 2024 after comedian Brain Jotter turned it into a social media dance sensation.

The unexpected resurgence brought a flood of admirers to Mike’s Enugu home, where he received belated recognition and financial compensation for his contributions. In a heartwarming tribute, Enugu State immortalized him by naming a major road in his honor.

For over six decades, Mike Ejeagha’s music transcended generations, blending storytelling with rhythm. Though he is gone, his legacy endures—preserved not only in vinyl records and digital streams but also in the hearts of those he inspired. With his son pledging to uphold his musical heritage, the legend’s voice will never fade.
