Inter Miami has appointed Guillermo Hoyos, Lionel Messi’s former mentor and the club’s ex-sporting director, as their new head coach after Javier Mascherano’s abrupt departure on April 14, 2026.

At his official unveiling, Guillermo Hoyos made it clear that his deep-rooted bond with Lionel Messi won’t interfere with his coaching responsibilities, vowing to push the football icon to his limits in training.

Hoyos steps in for Mascherano, who left Inter Miami citing personal reasons mere months after securing the club’s maiden MLS Cup triumph.

Having mentored Messi during their time together at Barcelona’s youth academy over 20 years ago, Hoyos emphasized the enduring nature of their relationship. “Our friendship is unshakable—it’s built on decades of trust,” he said in Spanish during his introductory press conference.

“But make no mistake, that doesn’t mean I’ll go easy on him. Professionalism comes first.”

While the club’s statement describes Hoyos as overseeing the team for the “immediate fixtures,” social media announcements already refer to him as head coach. Sources close to the organization indicate his tenure may be temporary, lasting only until mid-year, with a permanent coaching structure expected before the Leagues Cup kicks off in August.

Currently, Inter Miami holds third place in the MLS Eastern Conference after seven matches this season.

Leading the squad is Messi, the 2022 World Cup champion and eight-time Ballon d’Or winner, whose influence remains pivotal to the team’s success.
