Ex-Chelsea midfielder Emmanuel Petit has predicted that Argentina skipper Lionel Messi will end his career in 2026 following the FIFA World Cup.
Petit dismissed rumors of Messi potentially rejoining Barcelona this season.
The Frenchman stated that young winger Lamine Yamal has already filled Messi’s former role at Barcelona.
“Though Lionel Messi has been associated with a Barcelona loan return, Lamine Yamal won’t be sidelined,” Petit told EscapistMagazine (via GOAL).
“Messi could operate as a No. 10, but his lack of mobility raises questions about Barcelona’s midfield control.”
“Messi’s Barcelona comeback is unlikely. I hope he reaches the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where I believe he’ll then retire.”
Messi departed Barcelona for Paris Saint-Germain years ago after failing to secure a new contract with the club.
