Nigerian singer-songwriter Chidozie Godsfavour Ugochinyere, widely recognized as Fave, recently opened up about working with Afrobeats superstar Davido on their chart-topping track “Kante.”
During an appearance on The Nancy Isime Show, Fave revealed how Davido slid into her DMs after she had already recorded the song months prior.
“I had Kante ready long before Davido contacted me. He messaged me saying, ‘I’m finishing my album and want you on it.’
He wanted it to be a joint effort – not just another ‘Davido feat.’ but our song together,” she explained.
The rising star shared that Davido selected Kante from three tracks she sent him.
“I gave him three options, and he went straight for Kante,” Fave recalled.
The artist also spoke about her passion for songwriting and how her parents initially discouraged her musical ambitions to prioritize education.
“Growing up in a typical African household, I understand their concerns. My parents were incredibly strict – especially my dad. Mom and Dad, I apologize!
They worried music would distract me from schoolwork, so they didn’t encourage my creative side early on.
Still, I couldn’t help obsessively writing – stacks of notebooks filled with poems and lyrics. Now as an artist, writing deeply comes naturally to me,” she shared.
Fave admitted Kante was an exception to her usual lyrical depth, crafted for pure enjoyment.
“Kante stands out because I wasn’t aiming for deep meaning. It’s all about the groove – sometimes you just need music that makes you move,” she added.
