Media personality Dorcas Shola Fapson, famously called Ms DSF, has urged Nigerians with well-paying jobs at home to think twice before moving overseas for work.
During a conversation on Jay On Air’s podcast, she highlighted that jobs abroad aren’t always as lucrative as many assume.
She noted that while salaries in the UK might seem attractive due to the pound’s value, daily expenses like accommodation and transportation can leave little room for savings.
Fapson emphasized that staying in Nigeria might offer better comfort and career growth compared to struggling in an unfamiliar job abroad.
She also reflected on her father’s difficult experience when he initially relocated.
Recalling his struggles, she stated, “He juggled multiple roles—taxi driving, security, and accounting—just to make ends meet, yet it was barely enough to support us.”
While recognizing the appeal of earning foreign currency, she warned that the reality often involves unexpected challenges and relentless effort.
Her advice? Carefully assess the pros and cons before making a life-changing move.
She remarked: “Many assume living abroad guarantees wealth, but in truth, jobs like cleaning or taxi driving may not leave much after expenses. Nigeria could hold better prospects for you.
“Have you considered the cost of rent in places like London? Or how much daily transportation adds up? Earning in pounds doesn’t guarantee financial ease.
“My dad worked tirelessly—day and night—balancing multiple jobs just to provide for us. It wasn’t glamorous, and the money didn’t stretch far.
“Yes, earning in pounds is great, but building a stable life abroad demands relentless hustle before seeing real rewards.”
“Do you know how much rent is in the UK?”
