France’s captain, Kylian Mbappe, hinted at dissatisfaction with Didier Deschamps’ tactical decisions after Spain eliminated Les Bleus with a 2-0 victory in the 2026 FIFA World Cup semi-final on Tuesday.
The defeat dashed France’s hopes of a consecutive third World Cup final appearance, as Spain’s midfield dominance, led by Rodri and Fabián Ruiz, stifled their opponents.
After the match, Mbappe admitted France’s struggles against Spain’s midfield setup, criticizing their high-press execution.
“Facing a three-versus-two in midfield against Spain is always difficult,” Mbappe said. “Rodri and Fabián dictated play without pressure—we needed tighter marking and forced duels to disrupt their rhythm.”
The star forward acknowledged Spain’s superiority in ball retention and tactical execution, admitting France failed to impose their game plan.
“We couldn’t execute our strategy—technically or tactically. When you don’t perform in a World Cup semi-final, you lose,” Mbappe stated. “Spain played their style, controlled possession, and we couldn’t unsettle them.”
A first-half penalty from Mikel Oyarzabal and Pedro Porro’s strike sealed Spain’s dominance, while France struggled to create significant opportunities.
Mbappe, tied with Lionel Messi for the Golden Boot, also lamented France’s poor ball retention. “Even when winning possession, our first touch let us down. If we’re honest, we didn’t do enough to reach the final.”
Deschamps introduced substitutes Désiré Doué and Rayan Cherki in the second half, but their impact was minimal as Spain cruised to victory.
Cherki echoed Mbappe’s sentiments, conceding Spain outperformed France in every aspect. “They simply outplayed us—better in desire, tactics, everything,” Cherki admitted. “Even on a bad day, we should’ve been sharper. We’ll learn and return stronger.”
Mbappe’s frustration was evident late in the match when he clashed with Spain’s Unai Simón, earning a late yellow card.
Taking responsibility, Mbappe emphasized accountability. “As captain, I shoulder this defeat,” he said. “We aimed for the final but fell short.”
France will now face the Argentina-England semi-final loser in the third-place playoff, while Spain advances to Sunday’s final.
