Real Madrid’s injured forward Kylian Mbappé has sparked controversy among fans after being spotted vacationing in Sardinia, creating a media storm ahead of this weekend’s El Clásico clash against Barcelona.

The French international’s Italian getaway during what was supposed to be a recovery period for injured players—including Mbappé, Thibaut Courtois, and Arda Güler—has drawn sharp criticism from the Madrid faithful.

The backlash reached new heights when a doctored image surfaced online, featuring Mbappé’s face stamped with “Fuera” (Spanish for “Out”), initially shared by a parody account before spreading rapidly across Real Madrid’s social media platforms.

A petition circulating on social media has intensified the uproar, calling on Madrid supporters to “take a stand” with the bold statement: “If you believe change is needed, don’t stay silent—sign this petition and fight for what’s best for the club’s future.”

Tensions flared further when photos of Mbappé with actress Ester Expósito went viral last weekend, coinciding with Real Madrid’s crucial La Liga fixture against Espanyol—a match that could have delayed Barcelona’s title celebrations.

Despite Madrid’s 2-0 victory, manager Álvaro Arbeloa’s post-match remarks drew mixed reactions. While he stated it was “not his place to comment” on players’ personal lives, his reference to Real Madrid’s culture of “sweat and mud, not tuxedos” was perceived by many as a subtle jab at his star forward.

Roots of a football dynasty

“Real Madrid was forged through grit—players leaving everything on the pitch, their jerseys drenched in effort, not those who prioritize glamour off it,” Arbeloa emphasized.

He doubled down, declaring, “This is a club where no individual—past, present, or future—will ever eclipse the institution itself.”

Mbappé’s representatives, when approached for comment, dismissed claims of improper conduct, clarifying that his recovery protocol remains “fully approved by club medical staff” and that criticism ignores “Mbappé’s unwavering dedication to the team.”

The World Cup winner has previously addressed public scrutiny on teammate Aurélien Tchouaméni’s podcast, “The Bridge,” reflecting on the relentless microscope under which he operates.

“Criticism comes regardless—you might as well stay true to yourself,” Mbappé remarked. “I’ve reached a point where every move I make gets dissected.”

A club divided?

Despite being Madrid’s undisputed top scorer this campaign with 41 goals across all competitions, Mbappé’s return from injury in late March has been met with escalating scrutiny, with pundits questioning his perceived individualism.

Post-match comments from teammates Vinícius Júnior and Jude Bellingham after the Espanyol victory have further fueled speculation about internal rifts. Vinícius praised the team’s collective spirit, stating, “When we fight together, we’re unstoppable,” while Bellingham’s Instagram rallying cry—urging unity “until the final whistle”—was interpreted by some as veiled messaging.

The visible camaraderie between Vinícius and Bellingham, who lifted the Champions League together before Mbappé’s arrival, has only amplified whispers of a potential power struggle within the dressing room.
