Nigerian comedian DeeOne has sparked debate with his bold assertion that nearly all public demonstrations in the country are politically motivated rather than organic expressions of civic discontent.
Appearing on Vanguard’s The Nigerian Meter podcast, DeeOne accused Nigeria’s activist circles of losing credibility due to widespread political influence. He argued that what appears to be grassroots mobilization often masks orchestrated campaigns funded by power brokers.
“The truth is, 90% of Nigerian protests have financial backers in government or opposition circles,” DeeOne revealed. “When a genuine mass movement emerges, its authenticity will be unmistakable.”
The entertainer distinguished between principled activists and what he termed “cashtivists”—individuals who selectively amplify issues based on patronage. He observed that many self-proclaimed advocates maintain discreet affiliations with political figures, undermining their independence.
“Sponsorship automatically taints any cause,” DeeOne emphasized, suggesting that financial ties to political interests distort protest movements’ legitimacy. His remarks fuel ongoing scrutiny of Nigerian civil society’s autonomy amid growing concerns about political manipulation of public dissent.
These comments arrive during heightened national discourse about protest culture, with analysts divided on whether political involvement strengthens or subverts democratic expression.
