Football icon Lionel Messi has been honored with the 2026 Princess of Asturias Award for Sports, cementing his legacy as one of the most influential athletes in history. The selection committee revealed his win in Oviedo, applauding his extraordinary contributions to football and society.
According to the Princess of Asturias Foundation, Messi’s career exemplifies resilience, unparalleled talent, and dedication to advancing sportsmanship. His impact transcends borders, inspiring millions through both his on-field brilliance and humanitarian efforts.
Hailing from Rosario, Argentina, Messi’s rise began at Newell’s Old Boys before his transformative move to FC Barcelona’s La Masia academy at 13. His senior debut in 2004 marked the start of a legendary journey, earning him an unmatched trophy haul.
With Barcelona, Messi secured 35 titles, including four Champions League crowns, 10 La Liga trophies, and multiple domestic and international honors. After stints with Paris Saint-Germain and Inter Miami CF, he continues to redefine excellence in Major League Soccer.
His international achievements shine equally bright—victories in the 2022 FIFA World Cup and two Copa América titles solidified his status as Argentina’s greatest player. With 47 career trophies and numerous individual accolades, Messi’s accolades include eight Ballon d’Or wins, six European Golden Boots, and two Laureus Sportsman of the Year awards.
The Foundation also spotlighted Messi’s perseverance through adversity, overcoming a childhood growth disorder to become a global role model. His philanthropic work, including the Leo Messi Foundation and UNICEF ambassadorship, underscores his commitment to positive change.
The award acknowledges careers that embody sportsmanship and societal progress. Messi prevailed among 27 nominees from 12 countries, joining past honorees like Patti Smith, Studio Ghibli, and the Svalbard Global Seed Vault in this year’s laureate circle.
The remaining Princess of Asturias Awards—Literature and Concord initialize—will follow, culminating in an October ceremony attended by Spanish royalty. Recipients receive a Joan Miró sculpture, diploma, insignia, and €50,000 prize.
