Global football icon Lionel Messi has introduced fresh uncertainty about his involvement in the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Speaking with ESPN before Friday’s draw, the Inter Miami star, now 38, suggested he may miss Argentina’s title defense due to the influx of emerging talent reshaping the squad.

“I want to participate, and I’ve always expressed that desire,”
Messi admitted, reiterating that his fitness would ultimately dictate his availability.

“But if I can’t play, I’ll be there supporting from the stands—it’s a tournament that means everything,” he added.

“The World Cup is unforgettable for any nation, but for Argentina, it carries even greater emotion.”

Ahead of leading Inter Miami in the MLS Cup final against Vancouver Whitecaps, Messi acknowledged Argentine football’s deep talent pool, emphasizing coach Lionel Scaloni’s challenge in selecting the final roster.

“The squad is thriving with fresh talent alongside established stars—it makes integration seamless,” said the record-breaking Ballon d’Or winner.

With 196 international appearances and 115 goals, Messi has represented Argentina in five World Cups—more than any player in the nation’s history.
