Nollywood star Lilian Afegbai has opened up about the early struggles she faced in her acting journey, sharing how persistent rejection from industry insiders—including close acquaintances—nearly derailed her aspirations.
In a candid conversation with The Sun, the former Big Brother Africa contestant disclosed that despite having connections in film production, she was repeatedly sidelined for significant roles.
Afegbai recounted how producers and casting directors often dismissed her, relegating her to background parts rather than recognizing her talent for lead performances.
She admitted that the dismissals stung even more because they came from peers who underestimated her abilities, frequently casting her in insignificant roles despite her potential.
Rather than succumbing to discouragement, the actress channeled the setbacks into motivation, refining her skills and proving her worth through relentless effort.
The Edo State native emphasized that perseverance transformed her career trajectory, elevating her from obscurity to prominence in Nigeria’s film industry.
Reflecting on her journey, Afegbai stated: “Early on, I faced countless rejections—doors slamming shut, even from people I considered friends. It was disheartening to constantly hear ‘no’ or be offered minor roles when I knew I was capable of more.”
“Imagine friends in production seeing you only as an extra, not a lead. It’s one thing to take a cameo, but another to be consistently overlooked. When I’d speak up, they’d suggest I settle for background appearances.
“But I refused to accept that. I doubled down on my craft, determined to earn the recognition I deserved. Eventually, persistence turned the tide—those rejections became opportunities.”
