Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has affirmed Lagos State’s preparedness to host the prestigious CAF Awards, welcoming a high-profile inspection team from the Confederation of African Football. The delegation recently evaluated the Wole Soyinka Centre for Culture and Creative Arts, the proposed event venue also known as the National Theatre.
Arriving in Nigeria last Thursday, the CAF representatives are assessing facilities for the 48th Ordinary General Assembly and the accompanying awards gala. The group is spearheaded by Dr. Christian Emeruwa, CAF’s Head of Safety and Security and former NFF presidential candidate, alongside specialists in technology, logistics, and branding.
Lagos State Sports Commission’s Director-General, Lekan Fatodu, hosted the team on Monday, showcasing the National Theatre’s readiness. In a social media update, Governor Sanwo-Olu emphasized the state’s dedication to meticulous preparation, ensuring a seamless experience for attendees. He highlighted Lagos’s capability to deliver an unforgettable celebration of African football excellence.
This marks Nigeria’s fifth opportunity to host the CAF Awards, with Lagos last welcoming the event in 2015. While Abuja will stage the General Assembly on November 21, 2026, Lagos takes center stage for the awards night, recognizing Africa’s top football talent.
Prior to Lagos, the CAF delegation examined Abuja’s Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, the Bola Ahmed Tinubu International Conference Centre (the Congress venue), and the Transcorp Hilton Hotel. Accompanying them were key NFF officials overseeing media, security, and technical aspects.
President Bola Tinubu greenlit Nigeria’s hosting duties during the Africa Summit in Nairobi, endorsing CAF President Dr. Patrice Motsepe’s proposal two months ago.
