Popular actor Kunle Afod has opened up about his decision to showcase his philanthropic work for veteran Nollywood stars after years of operating behind the scenes.
The 51-year-old filmmaker shared that he had discreetly supported aging colleagues for a long time, assisting those facing hardships away from the limelight.
He disclosed that his outreach to industry pioneers had always been a personal mission until he recently opted to bring it into the public eye.
Afod revealed that the shift occurred after his 50th birthday, when he observed social media criticism suggesting actors prioritized lavish events over aiding the legends who built Nollywood’s foundation.
This backlash, he said, inspired him to document his efforts, allowing the world to witness the support being provided to these icons.
Since going public, Afod noted that his initiative has sparked renewed interest and appreciation for the often-overlooked veterans.
He emphasized that his current mission revolves around uplifting these trailblazers, offering both material assistance and heartfelt companionship.
“Turning 50 made me rethink things,” Afod explained. “When I saw comments like ‘They only throw parties, not caring for the legends who made Nollywood,’ I realized we’d been helping privately but needed to show it. Going public actually amplified support for our elders—that’s why I’m fully committed to our veterans now. They deserve this attention.”
