Kenneth Okonkwo

Renowned Nollywood actor and political figure Kenneth Okonkwo has called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to revisit its 2027 election timetable, advocating for a consolidated voting day.

Expressing dissatisfaction, Okonkwo questioned INEC’s decision to separate presidential and governorship elections by two weeks, emphasizing the financial strain on Nigeria’s economy.

He highlighted concerns over voter turnout, citing security risks and economic hardships that could discourage citizens from participating in staggered elections.

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) stalwart further criticized the ₦873 billion election budget, urging INEC Chairman Prof. Joash Amupitan to streamline the process for efficiency and cost-effectiveness.

“Nigeria lacks the luxury of conducting elections across multiple dates,” Okonkwo stated. “The current economic climate demands prudence—consolidating elections into a single day would halve expenses and boost participation.”

INEC’s recently unveiled schedule designates February 20, 2027, for presidential and National Assembly polls, with governorship and state assembly elections following on March 6, 2027.

Okonkwo’s appeal underscores growing calls for electoral reform amid Nigeria’s fiscal and security challenges.
