Veteran Spanish midfielder Juan Mata has confirmed he won’t return to Melbourne Victory for another A-League campaign, but his football journey may continue elsewhere.

At 38, the former Premier League star enjoyed a remarkable revival in Australia, earning the league’s MVP honors in the 2025-26 season—a testament to his enduring class.

Mata, however, isn’t rushing into his next step. While his playing days with Victory are over, he remains deeply involved with the club as both a shareholder and chair of their newly formed football committee.

Reflecting on his time in Melbourne, Mata expressed gratitude for the opportunity to reignite his passion for the game. He praised the club’s culture and the city’s vibrancy, adding that he looks forward to shaping Victory’s future while exploring his own options.

The club’s football director lauded Mata’s leadership and vision, emphasizing how his experience will guide their strategic decisions.

Mata’s twilight career saw him transition from elite European football—where he won the World Cup, Champions League, and Premier League titles—to an unexpected chapter in Australia. Before joining Victory, he had a brief stint with another A-League side.

Beyond the pitch, Mata has embraced sports entrepreneurship, holding stakes in a Formula 1 team and an MLS franchise.
