Former Super Eagles captain Austin Okocha has denied rumors of his interest in becoming Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) president.
After Nigeria’s 1-1 draw with South Africa in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, demands grew for the NFF board, led by Ibrahim Gusau, to step down. Speculation spread that Okocha was eyeing the presidency.
However, the 1994 AFCON champion refuted the claims and asked those spreading them to stop.
“Hello everyone, I want to clarify that the circulating news is false,” Okocha stated. “I haven’t discussed Nigerian football or expressed interest in the NFF presidency. I’m currently in Kigali for SPORTSBIZAFRICA.
“I urge those spreading misinformation to stop.
“I appreciate the support and understand the frustration, but better days are ahead. Let’s keep believing. It’s tough, but we’re in this together. God bless, and stay strong.”
The Super Eagles face the possibility of missing another FIFA World Cup following their stalemate with group leaders South Africa. Nigeria trails by six points, with just two games left.
The team will return in October for their final qualifiers against Lesotho and Benin Republic.
