Super Eagles defender Bright Osayi-Samuel has publicly condemned the appointment of Ghanaian referee Daniel Nii Ayi for Nigeria’s high-stakes Africa Cup of Nations semifinal, labeling his performance as subpar and detrimental to the game’s integrity.
The Birmingham City fullback voiced his disappointment with several contentious decisions made by Ayi during the tense encounter, which he believes negatively impacted Nigeria’s chances.
Osayi-Samuel highlighted questionable calls that shifted momentum, contributing to the team’s eventual 4-2 defeat in penalties after a goalless 120 minutes.
With this loss, Nigeria’s hopes of securing a fourth AFCON trophy were dashed, leaving them to contest for bronze against Egypt in the third-place playoff.
Speaking candidly post-match, the defender did not hold back in his assessment of the officiating, though he acknowledged Morocco’s strong performance.
“I won’t blame the referee entirely for our loss, but his poor decisions made it incredibly difficult for us. It’s disappointing to see such questionable officiating in a tournament of this stature,” Osayi-Samuel remarked.
Despite the heartbreak, he commended Nigeria’s defensive resilience throughout the match, conceding that the Atlas Lions simply executed better when it mattered most.
The Super Eagles now shift focus to salvaging pride with a podium finish against record champions Egypt in their upcoming consolation fixture.
