Nigerian hip-hop artist Melvin Ejiofor, popularly known as Illbliss, has publicly apologized after sparking a fiery debate online with remarks about the economic influence of the Igbo community in Lagos.
The dispute erupted last week when Illbliss highlighted the substantial investments made by Igbos in Lagos, emphasizing their role in boosting the state’s economy and real estate market. He questioned why their contributions often faced backlash while similar efforts from other groups were rarely scrutinized.
Tensions flared when a social media user countered, pointing out that Lagos had also played a pivotal role in advancing Illbliss’s music career. The rapper’s sharp retort—implying that his community’s property holdings ensured long-term financial gains—drew backlash for its perceived divisiveness.
Facing accusations of fueling ethnic tensions, Illbliss removed the contentious post and released a statement expressing regret. He acknowledged the frustration behind his words but clarified that his intent was not to undermine Lagos, a state he credited for fostering Igbo entrepreneurship and artistry.
He reiterated Lagos’s importance as a second home for the Igbo community, pledging continued respect and collaboration.
