Ex-Super Eagles star Samson Siasia has opened up about the pivotal moment that led to his suspension from the national team, shedding light on a controversial on-field decision.
The 1994 AFCON winner described the episode as one of the lowest points in his professional journey.
In a candid chat with Emmanuel Babayaro on UTVAfrica, Siasia explained how failing to assist legendary striker Rashidi Yekini during a crucial 1994 World Cup qualifier against Ivory Coast resulted in his axing.
The former Nantes forward admitted opting to take a shot himself rather than feeding the better-placed goal machine – a move that infuriated then-coach Clemens Westerhof.
“As a striker, you trust your instincts,” Siasia reflected. “Had positions been reversed, Yekini would’ve done the same. That’s football reality.”
The Olympian paid tribute to Nigeria’s all-time top scorer while defending his split-second choice: “We lost some, we won some. The legend himself missed chances from my passes too.”
Siasia recalled this career crossroads with philosophical clarity: “That suspension was tough but necessary – adversity either breaks you or builds character. It forced me to prove my worth all over again.”
Addressing lingering criticism about his decision, the former U23 coach remained unapologetic: “Fans analyze slower than players act. Football happens in real-time – no regrets.”
