Afrobeats sensation Simi has opened up about the health challenges she faced while working on her newest single, Where You Dey, featuring Chike.
Taking to her X account, the singer revealed that the track was initially slated for a 2023 release but had to be postponed due to her deteriorating health.
Simi described the experience as both physically exhausting and emotionally taxing, despite her enthusiasm for the project.
“I was beyond eager to release this song last year.
“The moment I shared the snippet, I was buzzing with excitement, but finishing it became a struggle—everything felt like a haze,” she confessed.
She recounted battling illness, exhaustion, and nausea throughout the creative process, even while filming the snippet.
“I was drained, weak, and constantly nauseous—my body just wouldn’t cooperate.
“Even in the snippet, I wasn’t at my best. I pushed through as much as I could,” she admitted.
Simi also commended Chike for his dedication, emphasizing how his involvement elevated the track beyond her initial vision.
“Chike’s voice is pure magic, and I knew he was the perfect fit. When I reached out, he was all in—he came straight to my studio the day after returning to town. His professionalism is unmatched,” she shared.
She revealed that Chike had no idea about her health struggles at the time, and looking back at the studio footage, she marveled at how she managed to pull through.
Beyond the vocals, Simi faced hurdles with the technical side of production, particularly mixing and mastering—tasks she reluctantly took on herself.
“After recording, mixing became another battle. And then, for some reason, I decided to master it myself—even though I despise mastering. I don’t know what got into me,” she joked.
The artist expressed regret over missing her original release window and not being able to promote the song as vigorously as she had hoped.
“Fans instantly connected with the snippet and kept asking for the full release. But I was too drained to create content. It’s frustrating because this song means so much to me, and I wish I could’ve given it more,” she said.
Despite the setbacks, Simi encouraged listeners to appreciate the track for the passion and perseverance poured into it.
