Nigerian football analyst Colin Udoh has revealed the reason behind Victor Osimhen’s unexpected substitution at halftime during the Super Eagles’ heartbreaking penalty defeat to DR Congo in the World Cup qualifier.
Amonpoint News previously confirmed that Nigeria’s World Cup hopes ended after a dramatic 4-3 shootout loss, marking their second consecutive absence from the tournament.
Fans were baffled when the Napoli forward, who had been instrumental in recent qualifiers with five goals in two matches, was replaced by Sevilla’s Akor Adams.
The Congolese team took advantage of Osimhen’s absence, turning the tide in their favor and ultimately eliminating the Nigerian side from contention.
Udoh disclosed to ESPN that the prolific striker had suffered a hamstring issue.
“Osimhen was substituted due to a hamstring injury detected at halftime,” Udoh stated. “After checking with the medical team, it was clear he couldn’t continue.”
“Nigeria’s unbeaten record in matches where Osimhen scores or assists speaks volumes about his importance,” he added. “His exit drastically altered the game’s momentum.”
With World Cup dreams dashed, the Super Eagles must now regroup and prepare for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations in December 2025.
