Inter Milan’s summer acquisition, Manuel Akanji, has reaffirmed his deep connection to his Nigerian roots while proudly representing Switzerland on the global stage.
The center-back, who arrived at San Siro on a loan-to-buy agreement from Manchester City, opened up about his dual heritage and early experiences with the club in an exclusive interview with Inter TV.
Born in Wiesendangen to a Swiss mother and Nigerian father, Akanji honors his African lineage with an eagle tattoo symbolizing Nigeria’s national team.
“It represents my Nigerian pride—the eagle soaring with a football beneath it. Though I wear Switzerland’s colors internationally, my Nigerian blood stays with me always,” he told Football Italia.
While acknowledging logistical challenges preventing recent visits, the defender shared nostalgic childhood memories: “I visited Nigeria three or four times growing up. The winter schedule and summer rains make trips difficult now, but those early stays left a lasting impression.”
Akanji vividly recalled his maiden San Siro appearance as a Dortmund player:
“That electric atmosphere still gives me chills. Now running onto that pitch as a Nerazzurro will be surreal. We’ll fight to make it our fortress,” he declared.
“My first jersey? Christian Vieri’s Inter top. I’ve tracked the club’s success for years—their recent dominance made this move irresistible. You dream of joining football’s elite institutions, and here I am, ready to contribute to Inter’s legacy.
“Personal growth and silverware drive me. I’ll push myself daily to exceed expectations on and off the pitch.”
The 30-year-old has slotted seamlessly into Simone Inzaghi’s system, featuring in all five competitive matches since arriving. While Inter boasts a perfect Champions League record, their Serie A campaign shows room for improvement with nine points from five fixtures.
Flanked by elite defenders at Milano’s iconic stadium, Akanji’s hybrid background continues fueling his rise among Europe’s top footballing talents.
