Nigeria will make its third Winter Olympics appearance at the 2026 Milano-Cortina Games (February 6-22) with trailblazing cross-country skier Samuel Ikpefan flying the flag solo for the African nation.
The Nigerian Olympic Committee announced Ikpefan as their sole representative, returning after his groundbreaking performance at Beijing 2022 where he became Nigeria’s first-ever Winter Olympian.
Despite training predominantly in Europe due to Nigeria’s warm climate, the dedicated athlete will compete in multiple cross-country events, potentially including team sprints, demonstrating extraordinary commitment to winter sports development.
This participation continues Nigeria’s remarkable winter sports journey that began with Simidele Adeagbo’s pioneering skeleton run in 2018 and includes their historic bobsleigh team qualification in PyeongChang.
Among African nations at these Games, Nigeria stands alongside seven other countries fielding 15 athletes across alpine skiing, freestyle, and snowboarding events – a growing continental presence in winter sports.
While medals remain a future goal, Ikpefan’s presence symbolizes Nigeria’s persistent winter sports ambition, inspiring a new generation of athletes to challenge climatic stereotypes in traditionally snow-dominated competitions.
