Ex-Super Eagles skipper John Mikel Obi has lauded ex-Chelsea proprietor Roman Abramovich for his unwavering kindness and deep care for everyone linked to the club.
During an episode of The Obi One Podcast, Mikel recounted Abramovich’s remarkable response when his father was abducted in Nigeria.
“Roman was exceptional. He looked out for everyone—players, supporters, staff,” Mikel shared. “I’ll never forget when my dad was taken, and Roman personally called me.
“He immediately asked, ‘Mikel, how can I help? Do you have a plan to rescue your dad?’ I told him, ‘I’m not sure yet—I haven’t heard from the kidnappers.’
“Without hesitation, he said, ‘Give me 24 hours. I’ll make sure your father returns safely.’ I was stunned—how could he pull this off from afar? But he reassured me, ‘Trust me, I’ll handle it.’ That’s the kind of person he was.”
Mikel emphasized Abramovich’s leadership, describing him as a visionary who transformed Chelsea into a football powerhouse.
“Our success, the trophies, our global stature—it’s all thanks to Roman. He didn’t just own the club; he built a legacy that defines Chelsea today.”
