Anthony Joshua

Renowned heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua narrowly avoided tragedy after a fateful last-minute decision altered the course of a devastating car accident.

The incident, which occurred on Monday, December 29, claimed the lives of two of Joshua’s close friends, while the boxer sustained only minor injuries.

The driver of the vehicle, Adeniyi Mobolaji Kayode, now faces serious charges, including causing death by dangerous driving—a case that took an unexpected turn in court.

Reports indicate Joshua’s survival hinged on a simple seat swap moments before departure. Initially seated in the front, he moved to the back at the driver’s request due to visibility concerns.

“My client maintains his innocence, citing brake failure as the primary cause,” stated Olalekan Abiodun, Kayode’s attorney, in an interview with the Daily Mail. “Joshua, being a larger individual, obstructed the wing mirror, prompting the seat change. Tragically, the front passenger bore the brunt of the impact.”

Kayode, 46, appeared before the Sagamu Magistrate Court on January 2, facing four charges: dangerous driving resulting in fatalities, reckless operation of a vehicle, driving without due care, and operating without a valid license. The case was adjourned until January 20.

The Ogun State Police Command confirmed the charges via their official X account, emphasizing the severity of the incident.

The victims—Ghami, Joshua’s strength coach, and Ayodele, his trainer—were not only professional associates but cherished friends. Joshua, visiting Nigeria after his December 19 victory over Jake Paul, was left devastated by their loss.

Promoter Eddie Hearn, who has guided Joshua’s career since his Olympic gold win in 2012, honored the fallen men in a heartfelt tribute, praising their unwavering dedication.

Discharged from the hospital on New Year’s Eve, Joshua attended a private farewell for his friends before their repatriation, as confirmed by Lagos State Commissioner Gbenga Omotoso.

“Clinically cleared for recovery at home,” Omotoso noted, “Joshua and his mother paid their final respects at the Lagos funeral home earlier today.”

The boxing world now awaits Joshua’s first public statement regarding the tragedy.
